Business internet for warehouses and logistics

A warehouse is a large floor where small devices have to work everywhere on it, and a dispatch cut-off that does not move because the network did.

The problem

What goes wrong on a warehouse floor

Six things operators tell us, most of them about the far end of the building.

Scanners drop in the far aisle

Coverage planned around the office at the front leaves the racking at the back without it, which is where the picking happens.

The dispatch cut-off does not move

If the WMS is unreachable at 5pm, the vehicles still leave. What changes is what is on them.

The WMS lives somewhere else

Cloud or head-office hosted, which means every scan is a round trip. Latency, not bandwidth, is what hurts.

Cameras are the compliance record

Continuous upload from every camera, and a client audit that expects the footage to actually be there.

Peak season doubles everything

A line sized for an ordinary Tuesday is the one you find out about in the third week of a festival run.

Nobody technical on site

A supervisor with a clipboard should not be the person diagnosing a link at 6am.

The answer

Sized against the floor, not the front office

What each requirement turns into once it is surveyed.

What the plant needsWhat we put behind it
Scanners working in every aisleA managed network with the access points planned against the rack layout, not the floor plan of the office.
A WMS that answers instantlyA 1:1 uncontended circuit with a short, predictable route. Latency is what a scan feels, not headline speed.
A cut-off that cannot be missedA 99.5% uptime SLA in writing, a 4 hr fault response target and a second path where the dispatch window is unforgiving.
Warehouse and head office as oneA point-to-point link, so stock and dispatch traffic between your own sites never touches the public internet.
Cameras and the weighbridgeHeadroom sized for continuous upload, and static IPs for the devices that must be reachable from outside.

How it fits together

Floor, office and head office as one network

What sits in the building, what it has to reach, and our network in between.

  • Racking and picking
  • Site office
  • Weighbridge and gate
Business network
  • WMS and ERP
  • Head office
  • CCTV and audit footage
One network

Multiple possibilities

  • Coverage planned against the rack layout
  • Site-to-site traffic stays off the public internet
  • Static IPs for the gate, weighbridge and cameras
  • 24×7 NOC monitoring on every leg

Use cases

What a warehouse link carries all day

Eight things that stop the gate when they stop.

Handheld scanners

Every pick, every put-away, every aisle.

WMS and ERP

Usually hosted somewhere else, so every scan is a round trip.

Dispatch and manifests

Against a cut-off that does not move.

Weighbridge and gate

Vehicles that cannot be booked in without it.

CCTV for audit

Continuous upload, and a client who will ask for it.

Head-office stock sync

Two sites that have to agree on what is there.

Vendor and 3PL portals

Somebody else's system, on your line.

Peak-season volume

The same floor doing twice the movements.

How it works

From enquiry to a running line

Four steps, and what each one settles.

  1. 01Tell us the siteThe address, what the connection has to carry, and whether there is more than one location.
  2. 02We survey the addressHow far our fiber is from your door, and what the route to it involves. Free, and no obligation.
  3. 03A written quotePriced against that route rather than against an average, with the lead time and the SLA on it.
  4. 04Install, test, monitorWe build it, test end to end, and the link joins the 24×7 NOC.
Questions

Questions warehouse operators ask

Why do scanners drop at the back of the building?
Because coverage was designed for the office rather than the racking. Metal racking and stacked stock absorb signal, so the access points have to be planned against the rack layout. That is part of a managed network, not part of the circuit.
Is bandwidth or latency the problem?
Usually latency. A scan is a small round trip to a WMS that lives somewhere else, so a short predictable route matters more than a large number on the quote.
Can you link the warehouse to our head office?
Yes. A point-to-point link keeps stock and dispatch traffic between your own sites off the public internet entirely. Multi-site connectivity sets out how it is built.
What happens if the line fails before a cut-off?
The link is watched from a 24×7 NOC and the SLA carries a 4 hr response target. Where the dispatch window cannot absorb even that, sites add a second path on a different route.
We are on an industrial estate outside the city. Can you reach us?
That is what the free survey answers. We build and own the fiber rather than reselling somebody else’s, so the question is the distance from our nearest route to your gate.
