How much broadband speed do you actually need?

Most Indian households are sold more speed than they use, and less upload than they need. Count what's actually in your home, set what happens at peak time, and this works out the download and upload you require, showing the maths rather than hiding it behind a number.

1Who's in the house?

It is not how many people live there, it is how many are online together. This sets that.

AdultsWorking, streaming, browsing 2
Children or studentsClasses, gaming, video 2
People working from homeEach one uses upload all day 1

2What's connected?

A rough count is fine. A device sitting idle uses almost nothing. What matters is what runs together, and that is the next question.

CCTV camerasThey upload all day, which is what fills your upload 0

3What runs at the same time?

This decides the number. Three screens, a call and a download all at once need far more than the same things one after another. Set what usually happens together in your busiest hour.

Video quality you watch
Screens playing video at onceTVs, phones and laptops watching video together 2
Video calls at onceMeetings, classes, family calls 1
People gaming onlineNeeds a steady line more than a fast one 0
Large uploads runningCreator exports, cloud backup 0

4How much spare do you want?

How comfortable the line should feel when everything is running at once.

Questions

How the calculation works

How much internet speed does a family of four need?
A family of four with two 4K streams, one video call and around eight connected devices needs roughly 200 Mbps download and 35 Mbps upload at peak time. If nobody streams in 4K, 100 Mbps is usually enough. The number rises sharply with simultaneous 4K streams rather than with device count.
Why does upload speed matter more than people think?
Video calls, CCTV cameras and cloud backups all send data outward continuously. On most connections upload is about a tenth of download, so a 300 Mbps plan may offer only 30 Mbps up. Which two video calls and four cameras will saturate. Gazon fiber is symmetric, so upload matches download.
Does having more devices mean I need more speed?
Less than most people expect. Twenty idle devices consume very little; four devices all streaming 4K consume a great deal. What matters is what is actually running at the same time, which is why this calculator asks what runs together rather than how many gadgets you own.
Is the speed I buy the speed I get?
At the router, yes. Over Wi-Fi it depends on the standard, distance and walls. 5 GHz Wi-Fi does not get through concrete walls well. A cabled test at the fiber box is the only true measure of the line; anything measured on a phone two rooms away is measuring your Wi-Fi.
What speed do I need for online gaming?
Gaming needs surprisingly little bandwidth, around 15 Mbps is plenty for the gameplay itself. What matters is latency and jitter, not Mbps. Higher tiers help because game downloads are large and because gaming rarely happens while nothing else in the house is running.
