The honest version

Why fiber broadband is better for content creation

For most households upload is an afterthought. For you it is the product. A finished edit, a backup, a live stream and a cloud sync are all upstream, and the connection most people are sold gives that direction a fraction of the capacity.

The arithmetic is worth doing because it is simple: gigabytes x 8000 / megabits = seconds. A 50 GB project is about 66 minutes at 100 Mbps and about 17 at 400. Over a year of weekly uploads that is the difference between an afternoon lost each week and not.

Live streaming is the other half. A 1080p stream is roughly 6 to 9 Mbps sustained upstream, and what drops frames is not the average but the dips. A symmetric line with nothing competing for the upstream path is the condition that matters.

Speed guide

How much speed do you need for content creation?

Size the plan for the household, not for the one device. Everything else on the line is what makes the difference.

What it has to carry

What the line has to carry

Uploading an edit

50 GB: about 66 minutes at 100 Mbps, 33 at 200, 17 at 400. GB x 8000 / Mbps, in seconds.

Going live

Six to nine megabits sustained for 1080p. The dips matter more than the average, so keep the upstream clear.

Cloud backup

Runs quietly all day and competes with everything else you send. Worth scheduling around a live stream.

Source footage

Pulling stock or collaborator files is downstream and easy. It is the sending back that sizes the plan.

Working with an editor

Round-tripping large files both ways is where symmetric stops being a specification and becomes a working day.

The household

A 4K stream in the next room takes from the same line. The speed guide above sizes for both.

Setup

Getting the upload you paid for

Cable the editing machine. Wi-Fi upload is the least reliable part of a home network and the part a long upload punishes hardest. A stall at 80% costs more than the whole difference between two plans.

Stagger the automatic things. Cloud backup, phone photo sync and an editor's shared folder all send at once by default; pausing them during a live stream or a deadline upload is free and immediate.

Questions

Content creation: common questions

Is the upload speed really the same as the download?
Yes, at every tier. 400 Mbps down is 400 Mbps up, and 100 Mbps is 100 both ways.
How long does it take to upload a 50 GB project?
About 66 minutes at 100 Mbps, 33 at 200 and 17 at 400. The arithmetic is gigabytes x 8000 / megabits, in seconds.
What upload speed do I need to stream live at 1080p?
Roughly 6 to 9 Mbps sustained. Every tier carries that; what matters is keeping other uploads off the line while you are live.
Should I use Wi-Fi or a cable for uploading?
A cable. Wi-Fi upload is the least reliable part of a home network and a stalled upload at 80% costs more than the plan difference.
Can I get a static IP?
Static IPs come with our leased lines and business connections. For a home connection, ask when you check availability.
