Fiber, and what it replaces
A fiber line is a strand of glass about the width of a hair, carrying your data as pulses of light. Copper carries it as an electrical signal, and an electrical signal fades as the cable gets longer. That single difference is most of the story.
On copper, the household at the end of the street gets a slower line than the one near the exchange, and nobody tells them why. Light does not fade the same way, so a fiber connection delivers the same rate at the far end of a run as it does at the near end. It is also why fiber can be symmetric: the upload is as quick as the download, which matters the moment you are the one on camera rather than the one watching, which is most of what broadband for work from home comes down to.
Why fiber is not the same thing as Wi-Fi
These get used as though they mean the same thing, and they do not. Fiber is the line that arrives at your building. Wi-Fi is the wireless hop from your router to your phone, in your own rooms, through your own walls.
It matters because it decides what upgrading actually fixes. Buying a faster fiber plan will not help a laptop two concrete walls away from an old router. Fiber to the home, or only to the building
“Fiber” on a brochure can mean the glass reaches your flat, or that it reaches a cabinet in the basement and copper covers the last stretch. The second one is sold as fiber and behaves like copper on the floors furthest from the cabinet.
